Community Service

First Presbyterian invests in the community through the following:

VALLEY INTERFAITH PROMISE

First Presbyterian partners with nine other local churches in the Columbus area to provide temporary housing for homeless families on a rotating basis. There is always a ministry opportunity when we house VIP:  cooking, fellowshipping, being an overnight host, etc. Call the church office to see how you can get involved in this awesome ministry for homeless families. Your involvement will be a blessing to the families and to yourself!

Break Bread Program

The Break Bread Program is a ministry begun by members of this congregation. Participants in the program help deliver a hot meal five days a week to individuals who otherwise would not get a meal. Meals are picked up at a local cafeteria and are delivered on an assigned route. Delivery takes about one hour or less. Volunteers, who are asked to deliver one day each month, are needed Monday through Friday.

Christmas Benevolence Market

For Christmas 2003, First Presbyterian Church inaugurated its first Christmas Benevolence Market to assist our local service partners. Christmas shoppers were invited to come to a "fair" at First Presbyterian Church to "purchase" a gift - like a door for a Habitat house - for friends and family which would benefit the service agency of their choice. It got us into the real spirit of Christmas, and it was highly successful - almost $11,000 was raised! The Christmas Benevolence Market is now a highlight of our Christmas season each year.

Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity

Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity, a Christian Ministry, builds and sells houses to low income families. Volunteers are needed not only to build the homes, but also to serve on various Habitat committees and the Habitat board. Call 322-0807 for more information.

Contact

Contact Helpline is a 24-hour confidential telephone listening ministry. Volunteers undergo intensive training to help learn to listen, to provide counsel, to give referrals, and to be a friend. Reassurance Contact volunteers make short, pre-arranged daily calls to the elderly or disabled who live alone. Call 327-3999 for more information.

Samaritan Fund

This joint ministry of First Presbyterian Church and St. Luke United Methodist Church offers financial assistance to families and individuals in emergency situations by helping with past-due utility bills, prescription drugs, and emergency travel. Call 327-4958 to volunteer.

Uptown Outreach Ministries - Food Pantry

This is a joint venture of St. Luke Methodist, Trinity Episcopal, First Presbyterian, and Fourth Street Baptist Churches. Clients receive a week’s food and are eligible to receive food four times a year. Call 571-8700 to volunteer.

Mission Possible

In the fall, members of First Presbyterian Church gather on a Sunday afternoon to engage in half a dozen or more service projects in the community. These vary from communion services at retirement homes, to lawn care for the homebound, to a life skills outing with troubled youth, or other forms of service. After this time of service, participants return for a fellowship meal. This program provides participants an opportunity to touch lives in the community and to build relationships with one another in Jesus’ name.
